The truth is, sex is both more important and less important than our culture makes it out to be. It is more important in that, at its best, it has meaning and mystery and emotional power. And it is less important in that it is by no means the most important aspect of life or love. But a visitor from another planet who just looked at our popular culture would have to come to two conclusions: the first is that sex is the only thing that matters, and the second is that sex and sexuality belong only to the young and ‘beautiful’. If you’re not young and perfect looking, you have no sexuality. And I think the ultimate impact of that is profoundly anti-erotic because it makes people feel less desirable. It certainly makes women feel less desirable. How sexy can you be if you hate your body?
